Christoph Jamnitzer: The Triumph of Chastity

The Triumph of Chastity

c. 1603
Pen and brown ink, and brown wash
168 × 196 mm
Delhaes collection

The drawing was executed in connection with Jamnitzer’s goldsmith masterpiece, the so-called Trionfi ewer, which – along with a basin – was commissioned by Rudolph II in 1603 and is today kept in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna. The design closely corresponds with one of the four reliefs adorning the ewer, the Triumph of Chastity. The heads around the central narrative scene in the drawing are detail studies. Some of them were utilized in the ewer reliefs.
