(centre left): Letter affirming David Haid’s employment with Mies van der Rohe, 1 December 1953 (Canadian Centre for Architecture, David Haid documentary file, facsimile). Winnipeg-born David Haid received his Bachelor of Architecture at the the University of Manitoba in 1950, working for Green, Blankstein, Russell & Associates to support his education. Russell encouraged him to begin graduate studies with Mies van der Rohe at IIT, which he did in 1951, completing the program in 1953. In 1952 Mies hired Haid to work in his private architectural office, where he stayed until 1960. He also taught at IIT. While in Mies’ office, Haid worked on Crown Hall at IIT. He was Project Architect for Mies’ first addition to the Houston Museum of Fine Arts in the late 1950s. In a letter to Russell dated 1 September 1953 in the Canadian Centre for Architecture archives, Haid wrote “I have found the work here most interesting and had the good fortune to be able to teach in the department last semester… Working in Mies’ office and teaching at IIT is excellent experience and always very stimulating.” Haid moved to Houston in 1960, but returned to Chicago in 1963 to found David Haid & Associates. He had a successful career in the Chicago area. Upper left: Perspective ’56 (University of Manitoba) open to show projects by John B.
