Miklós Csernátonyi chalice (Vitrin 1.15)

1701
Germany
Gilt silver, painted enamel
PFM IM 82

The oldest Baroque chalice of Pannonhalma also bears the name of its donor. Miklés Csernatonyi, a poor canon admitted to the abbey in the late 17th century. He offered - among other things - this chalice as a so-called confrater, a brother living within the framework of the order's community. Besides the date of the donation (1701), the inscription also reveals that Miklés Csernatonyi became the Abbot of the Holy Cross Abbey in Telki. The enamel decorations on the cup and the foot depict the devices used to torture Christ.
