Matthias Chalice (Vitrin 1.26)

1482 (restoration in the mid-19th century)
Gilt silver, filigree
PFM IM 54

The abbey’s oldest and most illustrative chalice, the so-called Matthias Chalice, with the year 1482 inscribed on its nodus between the figures of Mary and an image of Christ in pain. As a matter of fact, the monastic community did not receive the chalice from Matthias I; it was purchased by Archabbot Tamas Kovats (1783-1841) from an antiques dealer in Pest after the order’s 1802 reestablishment. The chalice required fundamental restoration work, which was carried out by the Viennese firm Anders, commissioned by Archabbot Krizosztom Kruesz (1819-1885). That was when the chalice received a new cup, and also its foot was also altered. The Gothic chalice has a six-foiled foot, with foliated-floral filigree decorations in its light-blue sections.
