Ciborium (Vitrin 1.27)

First half of 18th century
No accession number
Gilt silver
PFM IM 333

The three sections framed by putti on the foot of the Communion cup represent episodes of the Passion: the Division of Robes, the Crowning with Thorns, and Christ Carrying the Cross. Between the scenes, angel duos enclose the instruments of the Passion: the spear, the ladder, and the cross. Three oval medallions on the ample knop (node) depict the carved figures of Saint Martin and Saint Benedict-(?), and presumably the donor family's coat of arms. On the cup’s richly decorated bowl, the scenes of the Mount of Olives, the three sleeping pupils, and Christ tied to the column, complete the episodes of the Passion. The three parcels of the circular ornament of the lid are filled with the figures of Saint Stephen, the Penitent Mary Magdalene, and Saint Emeric. Dated to the first half of the 18th century, the gilt-silver cibonium was purchased by the family of Daniel Somogyi (1720-1801), archabbot at the time, at the auction following the 1786 dissolution of the Benedictine order, and was returned to the community among other previous collection items, once the order was reestablished (1802).
