Viaticum box with the coat-of-arms of János Telegdy (Vitrin 1.29)

1630
Vienna
Gilt silver
PFM IM 544

This traveling viaticum box was made, presumably in Vienna, for János Telegdy, Bishop of Nyitra from 1619 and Archbishop of Kalocsa from 1623. Bordered with a running foliate pattern, the circular inscription on the top bears Telegdy’s name and coat of arms. The box is divided into three compartments that were used to hold the holy oils for the sacramental unctions of baptism, the sick, and the dying. Besides the chrismals used to keep the holy oils, the archabbey’s collection of liturgical accessories also include incense boats (boat-shaped, footed containers with folding tops carrying incense) and a Bible pointer. The exhibited tin plates are some of the oldest pieces in the collection. Inscribed with the date 1619, one plate is adorned with scenes from Noah's sacrifice and the story of Adam and Eve, while the other, with the figure of Ferdinand III, is surrounded by portraits of German prince electors.
