The cup was brought to Pannonhalma from Bakonybél. Krizosztom Novak (1744-1828) was the last abbot of Bakonybél before the 1786 dissolution. In 1802, the king appointed him archabbot. His Benedictine brothers presented him with a glass cup adorned with the archabbey’s double coat of arms and the motto, “To the Honorable and Reverend Krizosztom Novak, Archabbot of the Saint Martin Monastery on the holy mountain of Pannonia.” The inscription below the rim is a chronogram, a Latin sentence with highlighted letters that, when read as a Roman numeral, compose a date, in this case, the year 1802. The text translates as “Saint Benedict, your ancient, glorious order takes its consecrated buildings on the Pannon Mountain back with a new light”.
