MARINE FLORA AND FAUNA OF THE PARATETHYS AND LAKE PANNON

Dolphin in the exhibition

Heterodelphis leiodontus ancient dolphin. The find was found in 1880 in a quarry near Szentmargitbánya in Austria. In the Badenian period, its remains were found in limestone sediments deposited in the Paratethys Sea, which covered the area of the Carpathian Basin. The importance of the ancient dolphin fossil lies in the fact that vertebrate fossils are rarely preserved in this rock. In addition to the skull, the scapula, limb bones, vertebrae and ribs of this specimen have also been preserved, moreover the fossilized stomach contents can also be seen in the enclosing rock.

Based on more recent research, the classification of the find has become uncertain.
