In the opencast mine of Bükkábrány, the lignite layers are set between 25 and 90 m deep under the recent surface. Above them, sediments of various colour and composition were accumulated in huge quantity in the last ca. 7 million years. The ancient flora and fauna, the natural forces and the changing climate also left their fingerprints in the deposits.
