The science of stratigraphy, which studies and systematizes sedimentary and volcanic rocks, is one of the most important disciplines of geology.
In the opencast mine of Bükkábrány, the lignite layers are set between 25 and 90 m deep under the recent surface. Above them, sediments of various colour and composition were accumulated in huge quantity in the last ca. 7 million years. The ancient flora and fauna, the natural forces and the changing climate also left their fingerprints in the deposits. The events, taking moments, days, weeks, or many thousand years, were written in the sediments, like letters on a paper. It is up to us whether we can decipher them…
