First half of the 1800s: Dinosaur traces
In 1802, huge footprints were found in the Connecticut River valley. Edward Hitchcock, an American geologist who studied them, mistook these as traces of huge birds. No wonder, as the footprints were left behind by two-legged creatures, but at the time, all dinosaurs believed to be four-legged creatures.
