The mineral rarities of the Metaliferi Mountains, gold tellurides

As surprising as it is, native gold is a common mineral. The reason is that gold hardly forms compounds therefore almost always occurs in its elemental state in nature. If it does form a compound, it does not do so with sulfur, like many other metals, but rather with tellurium. However, these gold tellurides are world rarities, with few known sites. Among them, Săcărâmb and Baia de Arieş stand out. Several such minerals have been described from there, and some of them were discovered for the first time in the world: krennerite, museumite, nagyágite, petzite, and sylvanite.
