One of the traditions of celebrating Purim is sending out gifts. It is a religious law that everyone should donate charity on this day, even those who live on donations. It became a common practice to send sweets, cakes, and fruit to relatives, neighbors, and friends on a small tray. Those who could afford it sent the food on a plate made specially for the purpose of delivering Purim gifts, or in Hebrew “mishloach manot”. The plates are made of pewter, which is the typical material for commonly used eating utensils. Therefore only the decorations and the inscriptions indicate their purpose.
