Equality, Fraternity

Jewish funeral customs stress that all people in death are equal. The body is dressed in simple burial shrouds and put to rest in a simple wood casket. In the pre-modern age, guardians and those who performed the ritual washing and dressing of the corpse were chosen by lot from among the members of the chevra kadisha, the burial society, thus assuring equality in death for anyone.
